About Us
Our Beliefs
Worship
We gather together to worship One God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We meet for worship and to fellowship with one another, seeking to encourage one another.
Mission-focussed
We are part of the work of the Great Commission, sharing the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with our friends and neighbours and partnering and supporting with others in proclaiming the Gospel throughout our land and all nations.
Bible-centred
We seek to be obedient to the Truth of God for all of life. He has given His truth in His holy, inspired, and authoritative Word in the Old and New Testament.
Confessional
We are a Presbyterian church and part of the Free Church of Scotland. We are rooted in the Protestant Reformation and are committed to the teachings of the Westminster Confession of Faith, and the Westminster Larger & Shorter Catechisms.
Our Leadership
Rev Ewen Matheson is the minister of Cross Free Church. He was previously the minister of North Uist, Grimsay & Berneray Free Church of Scotland before he accepted a call to Ness in November 2014.
Ewen is supported in his ministry by a dedicated team of elders and deacons. You can find some contact details here.
Our Church
The building was opened in December 1891. Cross Free Church is one of the largest churches in the Western Isles, able to seat 1,400 people comfortably. However, in 1968, it was reported to have held 2,000 people at an induction.
Built by contractor James Macrae from Stornoway, the church was constructed from rock quarried from An Druim Fraoich, North Dell, in Ness.
Our Community
Nestled on the northernmost tip of the Isle of Lewis, Ness is a breathtaking testament to Scotland’s rugged beauty. With its sweeping coastal views, pristine beaches, and rich Gaelic heritage, Ness captivates both visitors and residents alike.
The area boasts stunning landscapes, from the dramatic cliffs of the Butt of Lewis to the serene shores of Port of Ness.
At Cross Free Church, we are committed to nurturing spiritual growth, fostering strong relationships, and serving the unique needs of our area.
We extend a warm welcome to both locals and visitors alike – come as you are. Whether you’re a long-time resident or just passing through, we invite you to join us in worship and fellowship.
Our Denomination
Cross Free Church is a congregation of the Free Church of Scotland. It is a Presbyterian congregation, one of 19 congregations that make up the Presbytery of the Western Isles. This Presbytery is in turn part of a number of Presbyteries representing the whole of Scotland allied to a number of other congregations beyond the Scottish Border.

Our Worship
We enjoy singing traditional Scottish Psalms in our worship services at Cross Free Church. An example of these can be found below.
